Table of Contents

Introduction to Metformin

Metformin is a prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It is typically prescribed to help lower blood sugar levels by decreasing glucose production in the liver and increasing insulin sensitivity. Metformin may also treat other conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Why Has Metformin Been the Subject of Lawsuits?

Recent lawsuits have been filed against the makers of Metformin due to concerns over the presence of a potential carcinogen, N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), in the medication. NDMA is a chemical linked to an increased risk of cancer. In high doses, NDMA can cause liver damage, and the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies it as a probable human carcinogen.

Who is Filing Lawsuits Against Metformin Manufacturers?

Individuals who have taken Metformin and developed cancer or lost a loved one to cancer after taking the medication are filing lawsuits against the makers of Metformin. Some manufacturers being sued include Bristol-Myers Squibb, Merck, and Pfizer.

What Are the Allegations in Metformin Lawsuits?

The allegations in Metformin lawsuits vary but typically include claims that the manufacturers of Metformin knew or should have known about the potential for NDMA contamination in the medication and failed to warn patients or adequately remove the drug from the market. The plaintiffs seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages related to their cancer diagnosis.

What Has Been the Response from Metformin Manufacturers?

Metformin manufacturers have responded to the lawsuits by stating that the NDMA contamination is not intentional and is due to the manufacturing process. The manufacturers have also pointed out that the levels of NDMA found in the medication are below the limits set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for acceptable daily intake. However, some experts argue that any exposure to NDMA may increase cancer risk.

What Should You Do if You Have Taken Metformin?

If you have taken Metformin and are concerned about the potential NDMA contamination, speak to your doctor. They can guide whether you should continue taking the medication and what alternatives may be available. It is also important to keep track of any symptoms you may experience and to report them to your doctor.

What Are the Next Steps for Metformin Lawsuits?

The Metformin lawsuits are still ongoing, and it is unclear what the outcome will be. However, the lawsuits will likely continue for some time, and the manufacturers of Metformin may be required to pay significant damages if found liable for causing cancer in patients.

Conclusion

Metformin is a widely prescribed medication for treating type 2 diabetes and other conditions. However, recent lawsuits have raised concerns about the potential for NDMA contamination in the drug and the increased risk of associated cancer. You may be entitled to compensation if you or a loved one has taken Metformin and developed cancer. Speak to a qualified attorney to learn more about your legal options.

Class Action Lawsuit Against GlaxoSmithKline for Risks of Kidney Cancer

This class action suit was brought about by the U.S. plaintiff’s lawyer, John Kandel, a former diabetic. He lost his battle against Genzyme, Inc., the manufacturer of metformin. At the time, he was working as an attorney representing a patient who had been suing the company for exposing her to metformin. The chemical had been sold without prescription to people who didn’t need it. They distributed the chemical to people who needed it medically, but didn’t necessarily need it to help keep them alive. When the effects started to affect her life, she filed a class-action lawsuit against the company.

Metformin Class Action Lawsuits If you were a person taking metformin and developed cancer, you could contact a lawyer who specializes in these lawsuits.

An individual who has suffered from an injury such as a cancer diagnosis isn’t required to join a metformin class action lawsuit. However, the only thing that you have to be a part of a metformin class action lawsuit in order to sue the company is evidence that you used metformin illegally without a prescription. You’ll need medical records to prove this.

A representative of the U.S. plaintiff’s lawyer, John Kandel, mentioned something interesting about the future of these lawsuits; namely, that they’re only going to grow more popular.

“A lot of people are taking metformin because they think that it’s going to slow down their aging process,” he said. “The problem with these lawsuits is that if people are taking something that has a risk of causing them cancer, then it doesn’t matter how safe it is.” It doesn’t matter if a drug manufacturer knew about the dangers of the drugs, or if they were careless and did not warn consumers about the risks associated with the drugs.

In other words, a person who was suing a company for violating the Clean Air Act could just as easily be suing them for taking a harmful chemical and not being informed that there was a serious cancer-causing chemical present in the product.

The same is true of individuals who have died from exposure to a dangerous chemical, which was not disclosed. Even if a metformin class action lawsuit was initiated on behalf of an individual who was exposed to a contaminated drug, the plaintiff would have a strong case if they could show that the company was negligent in some way. This can happen if the company knew about the danger of the drug, failed to warn the public, and/or contaminated the product with N-nitrosodimethylamine, a potentially deadly carcinogen.

The problem with a metformin class action lawsuit, or any type of lawsuit against a company for exposing consumers to cancer-causing chemicals, is that no matter how powerful a toxin is, it will always escape the reach of the legal system’s justice system.

It’s amazing that companies that make billions of dollars per year are able to get away with poisoning people without any accountability. The fact that pharmaceuticals do not have to pay for damages on their own, and rely on reimbursements from health insurance carriers, make the situation even worse for innocent victims. Anybody who has been affected by a chemical must not suffer in silence, but must seek compensation through a metformin class action lawsuit if they feel that they have been wronged.

If you have been diagnosed with kidney cancer, you may qualify for a metformin class action lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline, the company that manufactures the popular anti-diabetic metformin.

GlaxoSmithKline knew that its popular anti-diabetic drug was dangerous for those with kidney disease, yet they knowingly marketed it as safe for use by patients with kidney disease. Even more frightening was the news that another drug, called Lyrica, was being sold in the same market by the same company. Both Lyrica and GlaxoSmithKline knew that their drugs were causing kidney damage in individuals, yet they chose to withhold this information from the general public and keep it secret. Through a successful class action lawsuit, the victims of these tainted drugs can receive compensations for their suffering caused by the negligent acts of a big corporation.

I have been seeing doctors to get started on putting in a port for inhome dialysis. I have surgery for my heart May 4th, it’s an out patient procedure. I am wondering if I might have a case, and look into my Metformin history. I know the road ahead is long & hard, I see dialysis as a death sentence eventually.

Money doesn’t make things better, won’t save my life. But I would be comforted knowing the manufacturer has been delt with, and could make me pass comfortably.
